Phuket, located in southern Thailand, is the largest and earliest developed island in Thailand, known as the "Pearl of the Andaman Islands".
Located in the southeastern part of the Andaman Sea in the Indian Ocean, Phuket is 867 km from Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. It is the only island in Thailand that has been declared a provincial status. It has a profound history and culture and is known as the pearl of the Andaman Sea. It was a tin mine base more than 500 years ago and a major tourist destination in Thailand with a population of 1.75 million (2004).
