Karon Beach
If you search for “Phuket beaches” online, the results will always feature the glitz and glamour of Patong. But what truly keeps connoisseurs coming back time and again—and makes them want to stay forever—is often another stretch of coastline 10 kilometers to the south: Karon Beach.
The first time you set foot on Karon’s sand, you’ll be startled by the sound beneath your feet: that delicate, crunching sound—like walking on snow—that travels all the way from the soles of your feet to the top of your head. Locals and seasoned travelers alike call it “singing sand”—because the sand here has an extremely high quartz content, and every step greets you. Not every beach in the world offers this experience, and for this reason alone, it’s worth making a special trip.
In today’s blog post, I’ll give you the inside scoop on this 3- to 4-kilometer-long stretch of coastline: who it’s best for, the best time to visit, how to enjoy it, where to eat, where to stay, and the pitfalls that few people mention online.
Beach Overview

Karon Beach is located in the central part of Phuket’s west coast, bordered by Patong Beach to the north and Kata Beach to the south. Stretching approximately 3 to 4 kilometers, it is one of the longest beaches on Phuket. With its wide, fine-grained sand and crystal-clear waters, it is less crowded and less commercialized than Patong, offering a quieter atmosphere. The sand here has a high quartz content, which produces a faint squeaking sound when walked on—a local characteristic. The beach is ideal for families, couples, and those seeking a peaceful vacation. There are no nightlife districts in the immediate vicinity; for nightlife, visitors can head to Patong, a 15-minute drive away.
Best Time to Visit
Phuket has a dry season and a rainy season, and the experience at Karon Beach varies significantly between them.
Dry Season (November through April): The sea is calm and the skies are clear, making it the best time for swimming. December through February is the peak season, when tourist numbers are highest and hotel rates are at their peak; November and March through April see fewer tourists and offer better value for money.
Rainy Season (May to October): There is heavy rainfall, large waves, and rip currents, making swimming risky. However, hotels are cheaper, there are fewer tourists, and it’s the surfing season.
Recommendation: If you want to go swimming, visit between November and April; if you want to save money or go surfing, choose May through October, but be sure to follow the lifeguards’ flag signals.
Main Activities
Swimming and Snorkeling
During the dry season, the sea at Karon is calm and the water deepens gradually from the shore, making it safe for swimming. The water is clear, so close to the beach you can often see fish and the sandy seabed, which makes it a comfortable spot for first-time snorkelers. Lifeguards patrol the beach, and you should always swim between the two flags near a lifeguard tower. From May to October, waves become larger and rip currents appear, so swimming is not recommended in this period. If you visit in the wet season, use the beach for walking and watching the sea instead.
Surfing
Karon is one of Phuket's most beginner-friendly surf beaches. The surf season runs from May to October, with the best waves between June and September. A few shops near the middle of the beach rent soft-top boards by the hour and offer lessons for beginners. The waves are gentle enough to learn on, but you must surf near the lifeguard flags, because the same current that creates the waves also produces rip currents. Ask the rental shop about the safe area before you go in, and follow the lifeguards' instructions at all times.
Watersports
On the beachfront you will find a full range of watersports, including parasailing, jet skis, banana boats and sea kayaking. These are available mainly during the dry season. Prices are quoted per ride and are negotiable, so agree on the price and the route before you start. The water shelves gently, which also makes it a good place for a first snorkel or a short scuba-taster session. Operators usually provide basic instructions and equipment before you set off. If you are unsure about anything, ask questions first, and do not book through unofficial vendors on the sand.
Beach Relaxation
Most visitors come to Karon simply to relax. You can rent a sunbed and umbrella for about 200 baht a day, or bring your own mat and find a spot on the wide sand. Walking, sunbathing and beach volleyball are popular throughout the day. Note that Thai law does not allow vendors to sell sunbeds and umbrellas on public beaches, although some still offer them for rent, so confirm the price before you sit down. Because the beach is wide, it rarely feels crowded, even during high season, and the soft sand is easy to walk on.
Watching the Sunset

Karon is well known for its sunsets. Every evening, tourists and locals gather on the beach to watch the sun drop into the Andaman Sea. The northern end of the beach and the beachfront restaurants offer the best views. The sky turns gold and orange before the sun disappears, leaving a red glow behind. This is free and happens every day, so there is no need to book anything. Just arrive about thirty minutes before sunset to find a good spot, and stay a few minutes after the sun goes down, when the sky often shows its strongest colors.

Located on the hillside between Karon and Kata, this viewpoint is about a 10-minute drive from Karon Beach and is free to visit. From the summit, you can see three bays—Kata Noi, Kata, and Karon—simultaneously; it is one of Phuket's most iconic photo spots and a common stop for island-tour excursions. It is recommended to arrive about an hour before sunset when the light is soft and the panoramic view of the three bays is clearest. Parking space at the top is limited, so you may need to queue during busy times.
2. Wat Suwan Khirikhet (Karon Temple) & Night Market
Locally known as Karon Temple, this site is within walking distance (about 500 meters) of the beach. The temple features traditional Thai architecture; the main hall is adorned with intricate wood carvings and emerald-green Naga serpent decorations, housing a giant golden Buddha statue—making it a wonderful place for a quiet, respectful visit. Every Tuesday and Friday, the open area in front of the temple transforms into a lively local night market selling Thai street food, fruit, clothing, and souvenirs at prices lower than in major tourist zones, offering a great way to experience local life. Please note that shoulders and knees must be covered to enter the main hall, and shoes must be removed.
3. Dino Park Mini Golf
Located at the southern end of the beach (near the Kata side), this is an 18-hole, dinosaur-themed mini-golf course. The grounds feature life-sized dinosaur models, waterfalls, and a smoking volcano; the area is illuminated at night, creating a fantastic atmosphere. Admission is approximately 790 THB for adults and 490 THB for children, with a playing time of about one hour—making it ideal for families or an enjoyable evening activity. A *Flintstones*-themed restaurant is located right next to the course, allowing you to dine immediately after your game.
4. Andamanda Phuket Water Park
Located a 10- to 15-minute drive from Karon, this is one of Phuket's largest water parks and features a theme based on Thai mythology. The park features a large wave pool, a lazy river, and various water slides offering different levels of thrill, along with restaurants and rest areas—making it an ideal spot to spend half a day. It is a great alternative for rainy days or when traveling with children. It is recommended to purchase tickets online in advance, as they are usually cheaper than buying them on-site; actual prices are subject to the rates on the day of your visit.
