Galle is a coastal city in Sri Lanka, located about 100 kilometers south of the capital Colombo. Galle is located in the southwest of Sri Lanka in the hinterland of the Indian Ocean. The old city of Galle and its castle are built on a rocky peninsula that is a natural harbor. It was a famous trade center in the east from the 16th to the 17th centuries. The Galle Fortress was built by the Dutch colonists in 1663 and included in UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1988. It is a typical representative of the European fortresses of defense in South Asia and Southeast Asia. It successfully integrates European architecture and South Asian cultural traditions.
