Small Wild Goose Pagoda is located in the Jianfu Temple in Xi'an city, also called Jianfu Temple. With its beauty in shape, Small Wild Goose Pagoda is regarded as an exquisite Buddhist architectural art heritage in the Tang Dynasty. On March 4, 1961, Small Wild Goose Pagoda was listed as the first batch of key cultural relics protection units in Shannxi province.
History of Small Wild Goose Pagoda
Small Wild Goose Pagoda was built in 707 AD, which is an important symbol of Chang'an City in the Tang Dynasty. Small Wild Goose Pagoda and the ancient bell in Jianfu Temple collectively known as Matin Bell, one of "Top 8 beauties in Guanzhong area", which is also part of the Xi'an Museum.
Small Wild Goose Pagoda was built to store the Buddhist scriptures, Buddhist figures which brought back from Tianzhu by the monk Yi Jing of the Tang Dynasty. There were five large-scale renovations in the Ming Dynasty and retained the previous layout. Jianfu Temple was repeatedly destroyed, only Small Wild Goose Pagoda was well preserved.
The Structure of Small Wild Goose Pagoda
There were 15 layers in the past, while for now, there are 13 existing layers with a height of 43.4 meters. In 1692, the two top layers of Small Wild Goose Pagoda were destroyed in an enormous earthquake. Small Wild Goose Pagoda was made of blue bricks, which is a typical work of the early Chinese pagoda with dense eaves. The width of the tower gradually decreases from bottom to top, and the outline of the pagoda body presents a tapered shape, which looks very elegant and beautiful. Highlights of Small Wild Goose Pagoda
There is a big iron bell in Jainfu Temple with a height of 3.55 meters and a weight of 8,000kg. This bell was a relic of an old temple, but it was lost and sank to the Wei River. In the Qing dynasty of Kangxi years, this big iron bell was founded and moved to the Bell Tower to Jainfu Temple. The monk struck the bell every morning to wake people up for praying and reciting scriptures. The sound was sonorous and clear. It's said that people tens of miles around could hear it.
Although the size of Small Wild Goose Pagoda is not so big as Big Wild Goose Pagoda, it has a quiet and peaceful environment with very beautiful scenery. Small Wild Goose Pagoda is situated in Xi'an Museum which is a historical and cultural leisure place.
