Supported by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Dujiangyan Panda Base is located in Shiqiao Village of Qingchengshan Town, 18 km from the urban area. Dujiangyan Panda Base covers an area of about 51 hectares (126 acres), and enjoys a favorable climate and natural environment with vast bamboo forest coverage and lovely scenic surroundings. Dujiangyan Panda base includes a panda hospital, a medical lab, 10 sets of monitoring enclosures, 30 sets of enclosures, a panda kitchen, an educational centre and staff housing. Dujiangyan Panda Base was open to the public in June 2013. It is the only professional organization in the world for research on the prevention and control of giant pandas. Also, the base offers giant Panda volunteer program that volunteers can take care of the giant panda and feed them.

 

What to Expect

According to the function, Dujiangyan Panda Base is divided into six regions: panda rescue and quarantine area, panda rehabilitation, panda disease control, prevention and research area, training and feeding area, public reception and education area, natural vegetation area, and office and logistics services area.  
 

Panda rescue and quarantine area

The panda rescue and quarantine focuses on pandas rescued from the wild who are sick or injured so they can receive medical care and rehabilitation.  The Dujiangyan panda base also places a major focus on senior and disabled pandas. Essentially, it serves as a panda “nursing home” where they are able to receive special care.

 

Panda rehabilitation

Panda rehabilitation is the region where giant pandas are carefully cared for in order to fully recover.

 

Panda disease control, prevention and research area

The panda disease control, prevention and research area focuses on diseases that affect the giant pandas and how they can be prevented. The Dujiangyan base has a large state of the art laboratory for research where Chinese scientists work side by side with researchers and scientists from the U.S. and other countries.  They work together to study panda behaviors and health, sharing information and research.

 

Public reception and education area

Here, visitors can observe the giant panda closely. I am sure you will love giant panda more. There are four gardens in viewing area: Panpan Garden, Shuangnan Garden, Linze Garden, Diequan Garden, where can see 20 pandas. Among them, Shuangnan Garden, Diequan Garden, Linze Garden and Panpan Garden can be fully opened to the public. There are 40 sets of giant panda animal houses in 5 workstations, which can accommodate at least 40 giant pandas. Linze Garden has been accommodated with 7 lesser pandas (red pandas), 2 black bears, and 35 pheasants such as golden pheasant, white pheasant, and ring-necked pheasant for visitors to watch. In the future, the number of pandas and associated species will be gradually increased.

 

How to Get to Dujiangyan Panda Base

By Bullet Train + Bus

One can take high speed train from Chengdu to Dujiangyan, get off at Qingchengshan Station, and then transfer to bus No.102. Walk a few hundred meters to reach the destination.

 

Self-driving

Go the Chengguan expressway and drive down the freeway at Chongyi Exit, driving along Pengqing road (Qingcheng Mountain direction) can directly reach Panda Paradise. It is estimated that the driving time costs 35 minutes. (From entry to motorway to Chongyi Toll Station costs 15 minutes, from Chongyi Toll Station to Panda Paradise costs 20 minutes)
