Yao Shan (Yao Mountain) is located in the eastern suburbs of Guilin City which is only 8 kilometers away from the city. The main peak of Yao Shan is 909.3 meters above sea level and the relative height is 760 meters, which makes it the highest of Guilin's many mountains. Yao Mountain originally came to fame when the Yao Emperor Temple was constructed on its peak in Zhou and Tang dynasty; today Yao Mountain is renowned for both its beautiful scenery and ancient mausoleums of emperors.
The mountain extends roughly from north to south and is tall and majestic. As far back as 1.6 to 1.8 billion years ago, Yao Shan was originally on the seabed. About 400 million years ago, the Guangxi movement was elevated Yao Shan to the land, and then Yao Shan declined to the shallow sea. Yao Shan was composed of sandstone and shale 300 million years ago. After hundreds of millions of years, due to physical weathering, the rock mass slowly destroyed and formed a gentle soil mountain. The debris accumulation on the surface still remains on the slopes and mountains. According to the investigation, the Yao Shan's fault has been pushed high from the Indo-Chinese movement 200 million years ago, the Yan Shan movement 70 million years ago, and the Himalayan movement 2 million years ago, and Yao Shan has become the highest peak in the Guilin group.

How to See? -- By Cable Car!
In Yao Shan, you don't have to worry about the tiredness of climbing mountain which will make you physically exhausted and uncomfortable. The facilities in Yao Mountain are quite humanizing. In the 1990s, the new mountain cable car was opened. The purpose is to perfectly combine amusement and viewing together.
The cable car was imported from Doppelmatry Cable Car Co. Austria. It is equipped with an alarm system and a TV monitor protection system. You will have a panoramic view of the whole city. The cable is 1416.18m long from the bottom to the top, the height difference is 423.3 meters, and there are 175 double hanging chairs. The one-way operation is 20 minutes 38 seconds, and every visitor can swim in the green sea and climb the top of the mountain without physically climbing. Traveling in the dense forest with natural sceneries along the way such as strange rocks, famous flowers, grass, and clear spring creek will let you fully enjoy the charm of the mountains with a thrill.

How to Get to Yao Mountain?
By bus. Take bus 13 or 24 and get off at Tombs of Prince JingJiang Stop. (Buses run from 8:30 am – 6:00 pm). It only costs 2 RMB.
By taxi. Without hesitation, the best way to come to Yao Mountain is to take a taxi! It costs about 30 Yuan.
