Sukhbaatar Square is in the heart of Ulaanbaatar. It is named Sukhbaatar to memorize their revolutionary leader. At first, it was named Sukhbaatar Square. And its name was changed to Genghis Khan Square for a time. Now its name is changed back to Sukhbaatar Square. There is a Sukhbaatar Statue in the center of the square. It is close to the National Classical Art Theatre and Central Cultural Palace in the east, also the municipal government of Ulaanbaatar and General Post Office of Mongolia.
Mongolians hold ceremonies at this square in important festivals, and the welcoming ceremonies of foreign heads of state and heads of government. It is the place for important national ceremonies, cultural activities and exhibitions.
Surroundings of Sukhbaatar Square
Sukhbaatar Square is surrounded by modern buildings. The Government building is in the north of the Sukhbaatar Square. It is the office of the national parliament, the president and the prime minister. Genghis Khan Statue stands in the center of the building, Kublai Khan Statue and Ogadai Khan are in the left and right of Genghis Khan Statue individually.
On the south is a main road, Peace Avenue, which runs through Ulaanbaatar from east to west.
The west of the square are the municipal government of Ulaanbaatar, the headquarters of Ulaanbaatar Bank, Mongolian Stock Exchange, General Post Office and Mongolian Telecommunications Building.
Looking to the east of the Sukhbaatar Square, you will see an orange building, which is State Opera & Ballet Theatre. And you can watch the performances here.
Stroll Around the Sukhbaatar Square
The Sukhbaatar Square is vast, with enough time, you can stroll around slowly. There will be activities here if you are lucky. And there are some citizens here. First floor is relics about the prehistoric civilization and the Stone Age. You can know about the stone tablets engraved with deer and rock paintings of Mongolia. The stone tablets engraved with deer are very mysterious and there are researchers studying them.
The second floor is richest in exhibition, which introduces the tribes used to live in the Mongolia Plateau in different periods. It tells you detailed life of the Hun, Serbi, Turk and Khitan. It also introduces the heyday of Mongolia, the 13th century and the Mongol Empire. The heyday of Mongolia starts form the legendary of Genghis Khan. You will know about the vast territory of Mongolia in the past, which spread across most of Asia. It also mentions the wars on the Mongolia Plateau in Qing Dynasty. You can also see the national clothes of the tribes in Mongolia at the museum.
The third floor introduces the nomadic life of Mongolia.
