Mt. Everest, also called Mt. Qomolangma, is the main peak of the Himalayas. Located on the border between China and Nepal, Mt. Everest is the highest mountain in the world with an altitude of 8,844.43 meters. Qomolangma refers to the mother of the earth in Tibetan. Many peculiar nature landscapes often appear in the Mt. Facts of Mt. Everest

Mt. Everest is a giant pyramid in shape, which looks very magnificent and powerful. It has extremely precipitous terrains and very complex environments. The snowline altitude of the northern slope is from 5,800 meters to 6,200 meters, and the snowline altitude of the southern slope is from 5,500 meters to 6,100 meters. The mountain tops are covered with snow all year round. 548 continental glaciers distribute between the ridges and the cliffs, with a total area of 1457.07 square kilometers and an average thickness of 7,260 meters. There are various serac bands on the glaciers, magnificent ice cliffs with about 10 meters in height, bright and dark ice cracks, as well as dangerous avalanches.
 

Within a range of 20 kilometers around Mt. Everest, peaks and mountains stands in great numbers. There are more than 40 peaks above the elevation of 7,000 meters. Some of them are well-known around the world, such as the fourth highest peak in the world with an altitude of 8,516 meters-Lhotse Peak, the fifth highest peak in the world with an altitude of 8,468 meters-Makalu Peak, the Changtse Peak with an altitude of 7,543 meters and the No. 38 peak with an altitude of 7,591 meters, etc. These surging peaks form an extremely magnificent scene.

Base Camp of Mt. Everest

The northern part of the Mt. Everest lies in the Tingri County, including two base camps. One is the West Base Camp which is located in the Zhaxizong town, the other is the East Base Camp which is located in the Gamagou district of Qudang town. With an altitude of 5,200 meters, East Base Camp is 19 kilometers away from the peak of the Mt. Everest. It is surrounded by a group of tent hotels with a China's flag and a flag of the Mt. Everest Reserve. The main function of the base camp is providing accommodation for tourists. There is the highest post office in China. Besides, the monument at an altitude of 5,200 meters is located 4 kilometers away from the south of the base camp.
 

The period from the beginning of April to the end of May is the best time to climb Mt. Everest. During this period, many mountaineering experts around the world gather here. Many colorful tent groups scatter in the open base camp, which looks very spectacular. As an important starting point and rear base for mountaineering, it has the relatively complete living facilities and the basic medicine equipment.

Rongbuk Monastery

With an altitude of 5,154 meters, Rongbuk Monastery is the highest temple in the world. It is not only steep and cold, but also has a wonderful scenery. Rongbuk Monastery was first built in 1899 by the Lama of Nyingma. It is a mixed temple of monks and nuns with local characteristics. The old monastery is located in 3 kilometers south of the new temple, which is close to the Mt. Everest. The new one was built in 1902 with one main temple, eight affiliated small temples which includes a nunnery. Rongbuk Monastery is 20 kilometers away from the peak of the Mt. Everest, so it has become a base camp to climb up the Mt. Everest from the north slope. It is a perfect spot to overlook the Mt. Everest. There is a circumambulation around the Rongbuk Monastery. Local people will come to the Rongbuk Monastery to enjoy the performances of the Lamas during the festival. The prayer stones outside the door is used as the shooting prospect of the Mt. Everest by photographers. There was a large-scale renovation in 1983. And now, there are many wonderful murals deserved to watch carefully.

How to Get to Mt. Everest

Firstly, you can take a bus from Lhasa to Western Suburb Passenger Station in Shigatse. The bus leaves every hour.

Secondly, take a bus from the Long-distance Passenger Station of Shigatse to Tingri County. There are only two shits per day.

Third, take a bus from Tingri to the eco-car parking lot and then transfer the eco-car to the Rongbuk Monastery. The Base Camp of Mt. Everest is next to the Rongbuk Monastery.

Tips for visiting Mt. Everest

♦ The only accommodation in the Mt. Everest is the Rongbuk Monastery.

♦ At the high-altitude place, the ultraviolet radiation is super strong and the temperature difference between day and night is very big. You need to prepare the clothes of all seasons, sun protection equipment, oxygen tanks and necessary medicines.

♦ Drinking some buttered tea, dairy products, beef and mutton can enhance the adaptability to the plateau climate.

♦ Please respect Tibet's culture and religious beliefs.
