Day 2 Taipei – Hualien

Entrance of Taroko Gorge, Yun Shan Shuei Castle, Tungtamen Night Market

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: In Hualien

After breakfast, check out and drive to Hualien passing by the Taiwan Scenic East Coast - Qingshui Cliffs, which are a twenty-one-kilometer stretch of coastal landscape along eastern Taiwan’s treacherous Suhua Highway between Hualien and Yilan. The long and narrow highway winds along the coast between the two counties and even though it is considered quite dangerous, it is also said to be one of the most beautiful highways in the world with views of the ocean over the steep cliffs. We are blessed with a couple of stops along the highway that allows us to get out of our cars and walk around to enjoy the beauty of the cliffs.

Continue the trip to Yun Shan Shuei Castle, on the way we will take a photo stop at the entrance of The Taroko Gorge. Starting at Swallow Grotto (Yanzikou) on the Central Cross-Island Highway, the Liwu River Gorge narrows until Cimu Bridge in the west. The Eternal Spring Shrine was built to honor the workers that died while building the Central Cross-Island Highway. Due to severe terrain changes caused by a major earthquake in 2023, the Taroko area in Hualien has suffered significant natural damage. For safety reasons, the Taiwanese government has decided to temporarily close the affected section. It is expected to be fully repaired and reopened in approximately six years.

Arrive at Hualien and you will have a chance to explore the famous Tungtamen Night Market, tasting the famous Taiwan snacks.
