Highlights of the Independence Monument
This traditional building will show its real beauty during the nighttime as it is decorated with 3 lighting colors, white, red, and blue. The three-light colors will illuminate the building from every angle along with the surrounding fountain. Also, these colors will shine like the Cambodian flag. Furthermore, on the eastern side of the monument lies a beautifully landscaped outdoor park that is suitable for running, cycling, and taking in the fresh air.
History and significance of the Independence Monument
This monument was built in 1958 to celebrate Cambodia's independence on November 9, 1953 from French colonial rule. The 37-meter high tower was designed by the country's famous architect Vann Molyvann. It is located in the center of the city at the intersection of Norodom and Sihanoukville Boulevards and is one of the main landmarks for tourists and locals visiting Phnom Penh due to its unique design. The monument is inspired by traditional Khmer architecture in the shape of a lotus flower, similar to the stupas at Banteay Srei and other Angkorian historical sites. It is also a monument to honor Cambodian soldiers who died in many wars.
Architectural style of the Independence Monument
This Independence Monument, a continuation of the architectural style of the Cambodian Khmer nation, is dark grey, symbolizing the blood of the warriors blending with the earth and seeping into the hearts of the Cambodian people. Each level of the tower is surrounded by a seven-headed serpent, a sacred object of the Cambodian people, to protect the spirits of the heroes. Inside the tower are stone tripods containing inscriptions, heavy and historical. The Independence Monument reminds every Cambodian of the days when there was no sovereignty and dignity, and of the price paid by tens of thousands of Cambodian people in the war for national independence and liberation.
Cultural celebrations
The Independence Monument is the focal point for various cultural celebrations and national events throughout the year. On Independence Day, celebrated on November 9, the monument becomes the center of vibrant celebrations, with parades, cultural performances and fireworks lighting up the night sky. It is a time for Cambodians to come together to remember their history and celebrate what they have achieved as a nation.
